The fallout continues from South Korean President Lee Myung-bak’s Aug. 10 visit to Dokdo (Takeshima to the Japanese) and his subsequent comment that Emperor Akihito should apologize for Imperial Japan’s colonization of Korea before he considers visiting South Korea. Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi has postponed a planned trip to South Korea and indicated that the diplomatic tensions could affect the renewal of an expanded foreign-exchange swap agreement due to expire in October. And on Friday, Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba proposed that Japan and South Korea take their dispute to the International Court of Justice. A spokesman for the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade quickly rejected the proposal, saying that “there isn’t any territorial dispute over Dokdo as it is clearly inherent Korean territory.”
